Project Co-ordinator, Talking Together

My name is Jenny and I am a project co-ordinator on the Talking Together project, providing volunteer-led English language classes to migrant communities in Birmingham.

I have worked in the charity sector since 2006; a big part of which has included managing volunteers and setting up mentoring projects for women and young people affected by gender-based violence, sexual exploitation, homelessness, substance misuse and the criminal justice system.

I love to see the positive change that occurs not only in the lives of those we support but the powerful impact it has on volunteers also.

After graduating I gained a TEFL qualification and volunteered for the Voluntary Service Oversees (VSO); teaching English in China. I still draw on this experience today, when training our volunteers to communicate with learners without a shared language. My own experience of being unable to easily communicate whilst in China, helps me to really appreciate how providing the opportunity for learners to practice speaking English on a Talking Together course results in greater confidence, independence and connection to society.
