Time For Children Extending Horizons for young people in care extending horizons for young people in care

Time for Children is a programme being run in Greater Manchester, Lancashire and the West Midlands. TimeBank has partnered with The National Literacy Association (NLA), The Who Cares? Trust (WCT) and Volunteer Reading Help (VRH) to encourage and support children in public care in their reading and learning.

How will Time for Children benefit children in care?

  • Around 60,000 children and young people in England are separated from their families and living in residential or foster care. In 98% of cases, children are in care through no fault of their own.
  • Through the Time for Children programme you can change the course of a child’s life. As a volunteer you will be trained to encourage and support children in public care in their reading and learning
  • Your time will help children in care improve their reading and encourage self-esteem

How much time will I need to give?
Initial training will take 6-8 hours. You are asked to give a minimum of two one-hour sessions a week and commit for a year.

People think that if you are in care you are different from everybody else. That is wrong. We just need to be given the same opportunities and chances as everyone else.
